The Grenache was harvest on September 3 and the Carignan on September 19, 2014. The weather was spectacular both days and we had no trouble hand-picking the grapes. The Grenache and Carignan were fermented separately and blended in March of 2015. Thirty percent of the wine was aged in new French and American barrels.
About The Region and Vineyards:
The Carignan vineyards are located next to the village of El Molar in the province of Catalunya. One (Finca Alta) was planted in 1975 and the other (Finca Vieja) was planted in 1952. The vineyards are near the top of a mountain and enjoy full sunlight all day. The soils are calcareous with some decomposed slate. There are numerous pebbles of quartz and the occasional galet present. The soil ranges from pale yellow to pale pink and reflects the abundant sunlight well. This allows the soil to cool down after sunset which contributes to maintaining good acidity in the fruit. We are only twenty miles from the Mediterranean and get a steady breeze almost all the time. There is a cool wind from the sea most of the day while a warmer, drier wind from the north prevails at night. The combination of soil, elevation and climate make this area an agricultural paradise. It's perfect for wine grapes.
About The Winemaker: Dr. Russell Smith
Russell's career in wine making began in 1983 in Napa Valley where he honed his craft while working with well known wineries including Joseph Phelps Vineyards and Flora Springs. He would then move to Texas and become winemaker for Becker Vineyards in the Texas Hill Country for 13 years. He was always captivated by the picturesque vineyards in Spain, and decided to pursue his lifelong dream of winemaking along Spain’s Northeastern Coastline where the Mediterranean sun and breezes produce the world’s best grapes. He acquired his own vineyards near Barcelona in the prestigious Montsant region and began producing world class wines there in 2013. He artfully created elegant wines that capture the essence of what Spanish wine connoisseurs have enjoyed for thousands of years, in a way that appeals to modern tastes. “My goal is to create blends that introduce a bit of classic Spanish quality in a format that is familiar to the American Palate.
